Editor's note:The central axis of China's capital has a history of over 750 years, and stretches 7.8 kilometers from the Bell and Drum Towers in the north to the Yongding Gate in the south. Numerous ancient structures and cultural relics line up along this historical strip of land and its extensions, all in harmony with modern buildings and landmarks.

The formal application for Beijing Central Axis to become a world cultural heritage site was submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Center recently. Let us walk along the historical landmark in these pictures, and discover its symmetric beauty and the time-honored history and profound culture that it has kept alive.
