Yin'an Hall

Yin'an Hall, or Yin An Dian, is the principal building in the middle row of Prince Gong’s Mansion. It was also known as Yin Luan Dian (silver bell hall), as there’s a Jinluan Dian (gold bell hall) in the Forbidden City.

The architecture is more symbolic than functional – the ceremonial hall was only opened for major festivals. According to contemporary documents, the hall was reserved for the princes’ seals and any documents issued by the Emperors to the Princes and Princesses.

One of the Hall’s interesting features is its roof of green glazed tile. The technology of the glazed- tile had already reached its peak during the reign of Emperor Qianlong’s reign, but its use in building was limited because of the strict social estate system – yellow glazed tiles could only be used by the Emperor or on temples, and only the Prince and Princess could use green glazed-tiles.

In 1921 the Hall was razed to the ground by fire. It was rebuilt in 2005 after years of study and research by experts, using documentary records and old photos.
