Yang Jiechi Disagrees with Theory of Global Power's Shift to the East

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi jointly held a press conference with Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa in Mexico City on July 30, 2010. When asked if he agreed with the view that power in the world was moving from the west to the east, Yang said he did not. He said he believed the world was developing in a relatively balanced direction. This was the unavoidable result of ongoing global multi-polarization, economic globalization and also the rapid progress of science and technology.

Yang said multi-polarization meant not only the rapid development of emerging developing giants, but also increasing growth in the regional power of these developing countries. This was happening in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Like the developed countries and their groupings, the emerging developing giants were presenting themselves as powers unable to be ignored on the international stage.

To make international relationships more democratic was the common call of world populations and also the objective demand and specific reflection of multi polarization and globalization, Yang said. The birth and growth of the G20 was a good example.

Involved in complex global problems and challenges, countries have close connections of interests.

As for issues concerning world peace and development, countries should negotiate, instead of letting a small number of countries to decide them, Yang said, all countries should and must strengthen cooperation, so as to realize win-win results and common development.

The striking problem in many aspects, Yang said, was "the vast majority of developing countries' reasonable stances and demands relating to their interests were not fully respected or emphasized."

Developing countries should consolidate their unity and cooperation to win equal rights of speech and an equal quota of representation in international organizations. This process would take long-term hard work, but was an irreversible trend of history.

In order to maintain and promote common interests of vast developing countries and also the fundamental interests of people of the whole world, Yang said, China stands ready to join hands with the rest of the world to push forward South-South cooperation and North-South dialogue, to promote international political and economic order in a juster and more reasonable direction.
