Central Asia trip and attendance of the G20 and SCO summits

On September 5 and 6, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the 8th G20 Leaders’ Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia and delivered an important speech that stressed all countries work together to maintain and develop an open world economy.

Foreign experts, scholars and officials interviewed by People’s Daily, said that Xi’s speech gave people more confidence in a strong and stable Chinese economy, which would benefit the entire world.

Working together to maintain and develop an open world economy

Louis Truss, Spanish economist and author of Awakening China, said Xi stressed that China would unswervingly deepen its reform in an all-round way and adhere to a strategy of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, while revealing that the Chinese Government is confident of realizing sustainable and healthy development of its economy through continuous restructuring. With world economic recovery still weak, countries should bolster their markets and seek out mutually beneficial opportunities. Protectionism is neither wise nor desirable for anyone.

Lytton L. Guimaraes, Director of the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Brasilia and an expert on China, said China is now in a critical period of economic reform. Xi’s address shed light on the country’s role as a responsible power in both domestic and global development. He also urged guarding against trade protectionism and gave advice on how to make use of international and domestic markets.

B. R. Deepak, Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University in India said Xi’s speech stressed the common growth of all countries and win-win development through cooperation. All counties take development seriously and have a duty to advance international economic and financial reform while fighting trade protectionism. Xi also said that China would firmly push forward structural reform and maintain its momentum of growth, driving BRICS as well as the world economy.

Ulan Abudnaslov, Adviser to the Minister of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic, said cooperation is key to win-win long-term global economic growth. In recent years, China has adhered to the principle of mutual benefit while maintaining rapid economic development. Xi proposed inclusive interests in his speech, which all governments should value.

China is capable of maintaining sustainable economic development

Benjamin Rode, a member of the United States delegation to the 8th G20 summit, said that Xi analyzed both internal and external factors that impact Chinese economic growth. It made people aware that China’s economy also relies on favorable external conditions, in the light of increasing globalization.

Kouyate, former Finance and Economy Minister of Mali, said that China is a responsible power and that its economy is integrating with the global market. The country always takes an overall consideration of its external environment as well as its own national conditions. In a bid to realize sustainable economic development, the quality of growth is key. Thus, the Chinese economy must make a breakthrough on innovation and structural adjustment. Only in this way can the world economy become more healthy and balanced. He believes that China is bound to achieve new progress.

Ruguchi Yousuke, a senior official at Japan’s Shinkin Central Bank, said that the fundamentals underlying the Chinese economy are good, and that its stable development would make a contribution to the world economy. Xi made a detailed introduction to the market-oriented reform of China’s interest and exchange rates as well as on enhancing the elasticity of RMB. His speech can be recognized as China’s affirmative stance on deepening reforms, which will help the economy grow at a more stable pace and boost global integration and development.

Michael McDonough, Senior Economist at Bloomberg, said that the Chinese Government has taken strong measures to safeguard sustainable development and opening-up of the country. Xi’s speech again stressed the continuity of such a policy. In spite of many tasks ahead, the Chinese Government is striding in the correct direction.

BBC Correspondent Emir Paiva said although the growth pace of the Chinese economy recently dropped a little, Xi told the world its economy would continue to develop.

China’s economy will benefit the world at large

Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), affirmed that the achievements and global benefits of China’s economic growth are obvious to all. It is currently the largest exporting country as well as the largest market for products and services.

Waldemar Garko, Director of the Asia-Pacific Research Center of the Institute of Political Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, said that under current circumstances world economic growth remains weak and that the Euro debt crisis has not yet been reined in, while China, the second largest economy in the world, maintains sound and stable economic development. Its economic growth is an effective prescription in leading the global economy out of financial crisis.

Karay Asine, Professor of the Higher Institute of Economics and Trade, University of Tunis, pointed out that against the background of major economies experiencing weak growth, the world market stands at a crucial crossroad. At the 8th G20 summit, China and other major developing countries pointed to the development potential and increasing influence of international cooperation. He believes that China will continue to drive recovery of world economy, alongside Africa and Arab countries.

Joseph, a correspondent of Tele Congo, and Banga, a diplomatic official at the Embassy of the Republic of Central Africa in South Africa, said that China as a developing country plays an important role at the G20 summit, while revealing optimism about the country’s economic prospects.

Yang Pyeong Seob, Head of the China Team at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), said the Asian economy is highly dependent on the sustainable and steady growth of China’s economy. As an important developing country and emerging market, its role in the G20 will help along world economic recovery.

Morio Matsumoto, Professor of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan, said the international community is faced with many challenges, especially related to peace, security and economic growth. China, as a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council and the second largest economy in the world, has become an important participant in the international community. He believes the country will receive more support via cooperation with other states.

Philippe Martin, an economics professor of Sciences Po in France, said that the current world economic situation is very grim and that certain emerging economies are encountering growth problems, though China remains unaffected. China always advocates a stable world economy and, during the G20 summit, called for assistance to emerging economies.
