History Cannot Be Changed but the Future Can Be Created

— Taiwan media speak highly of achievements stemming from Xi Jinping-Lien Chan meeting

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Xi Jinping met with visiting Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan and members of a delegation from Taiwan led by Lien in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse on February 18. Taiwanese media paid special attention and gave praise to the meeting, saying that it laid the foundations for the future prospects of cross-Straits relation. They said the remarks of Xi on the cross-Straits relations are full of warmth that both sides of the strait are one family and enriched the connotations of the One-China principle.

The United Daily News in Taiwan devoted an entire page to the Xi-Lien meeting quoting Xi's remarks, using "History cannot be changed but the future can be created" as the title. Another story in the newspaper focused on Xi's remarks, particularly his comment that "both sides (of the Taiwan Straits) are one family," which the newspaper considered a complete statement of mainland's new strategy for cross-Straits relations. The story also talked about the speech by Xi during the last Xi-Lien meeting in 2013, in which Xi stressed the continuity of the policy of the new generation of leadership of the mainland government toward Taiwan. This time however, Xi's speech stressed the notion of expanding mutual exchanges between all walks of life across the Straits, enriching and consolidating the concept of the One-China principle.

Taiwan's China Times reported that Xi's speech during meeting with Lien Chan mainly put forward four points of view. The speech mentioned that both sides are one family and put to use phrases such as "crossing the black water channel," "seeking a life," making people feel Xi's sincerity. It shows that the mainland's policy toward Taiwan pays more attention to touch the emotion of Taiwan people. When referring the common destiny of both sides across the Straits, Xi's words were very plain too. He said that "the Chinese mainland respects the social system and lifestyle that our compatriots in Taiwan have chosen. We are willing to share the mainland's development opportunities." The article commented that the speech was very rational and reasonable, making Xi's points convincing.

Taiwan's Want Daily reported the meeting as its headline story on the front page, saying that Xi's remarks during meeting with Lien were full of warmth and stressed that there is no problem that cannot be resolved across the Straits.

The Central News Agency (CNA) in Taiwan said the speech by Xi is the most important statement to date by China's mainland on its policy toward Taiwan. Using the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as its axis, the speech reiterated the adherence to the 1992 Consensus. CNA also quoted remarks by observers as saying that focusing on history, kinship, destiny and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, Xi's speech has connected Chinese Dream with the common dream of people across the Straits and that it was very sincere and touching.
