Surfers from several foreign countries participated in an event titled "the Aceh Beach Games II" in Indonesia, the national news agency Antara reported on Monday.

The championship was conducted in coastal area of Lhoknga in Aceh Besar regency.

"Several foreign surfers who participate in the Aceh Beach Games II came from France, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Germany," said the surfing coordinator Yudi in the provincial capital city of Banda Aceh.

The championship held on Sunday is a part of the Aceh Beach Games II that is conducted for the first time, apart of other activities like forestation and traditional sports.

The surfing championship was divided in two parts, beginner and open, joined by tens of surfers, both domestic and foreign ones.

Local surfers dominated the championship, grabbing the first position in both categories.

According to Yudi, the activity is scheduled to be a regular agenda.

"It is positive and functions as talent channeling for water sport lover," he said.

Surfing becomes more popular post-tsunami in 2004 as many foreign people live in Aceh and the westernmost province is more open for them.
