3. 1954 FIFA World Cup Final-“Miracle of Bern”

The 1954 World Cup final was played at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, Switzerland, between West Germany and Hungary.

The 1954 German team came into the game as underdogs yet defeated the legendary Hungarian squad that had gone undefeated for four years. In fact, Hungary had even thrashed the German backups 8-3 in the group stages. A resilient Germany fought back from an early two-goal deficit to win 3-2. Helmut Rahn scored the winning goal with six minutes remaining in regular time. The victory proved euphoric for Germany, which had been spiritually and economically shattered by war. Winning the Jules Rimet Trophy by beating the world's strongest team infused the country with renewed pride and is seen as a herald of Germany's economic and political recovery.
