After becoming the youngest women's world chess champion last year, China's Hou Yifan successfully defended her title in Tirana, Albania yesterday, defeating India's Humpy Koneru by 5.5-2.5 in the final.

Under competition rules, the winner of the 10-match final is the first player to 5.5 points. Hou Yifan secured the decisive score after only eight games, forcing a draw in the eighth game, which Koneru needed to win to stay in the contest.

Commenting after the final, Hou said: "As I only needed a draw to claim the championship, I played today's match with a level of caution from start to finish."
