Victoria Azarenka of Belarus claimed her first Grand Slam title by beating fourth seed Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets on Saturday night at the Australian Open women's singles final.
It took the third seed Azarenka only 82 minutes to book the triumph 6-3, 6-0 in an unexpected easy way.
The 22-year-old Belarussian, who had never entered the final of any Grand Slam tournament in her career before, also took over the word No. 1 spot, which was vacated by Dane Caroline Wozniacki after her quarterfinal exit.
Losing her very first serve in the opening set and falling behind at 0-2, Azarenka launched an unstoppable comeback to dominate the match with a 12-1 run to seal the victory.
Now, Azarenka and Sharapova share a 4-3 head-to-head record, the Belarusian won the three finals they contested, all on hardcourt.
