Novak Djokovic of Serbia beat Rafael Nadal of Spain in a marathon match to retain the men's singles champion of the Australian Open on Sunday.
Djokovic, who defeated Nadal in the finals of Wimbledon and U.S. Open last year, won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in a tournament record of five hours 53 minutes for his third Australian Open champion.
It is Djokovic's fourth grand slam title in five and fifth in his career and helps him consolidate his status as world number one, which he gained after beating Nadal in last year's Wimbledon final.
The Serbian has defeated the Spaniard for seven consecutive times.
