Williams joins Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova as the only women to have won the same event six times.
The top seed rallied after dropping the first set to Sharapova, who had come into the title match with this month's Indian Wells trophy and 11 straight wins without the loss of a set.
Williams ended that streak as she won her 11th straight match against the LA-based Russian, who has not beaten the American since 2004.
