Juventus beat Torino 2-0 on Sunday to move within one point of retaining the Serie A title.
The breakthrough came four minutes from time when Arturo Vidal scored for Juventus, prompting a frantic final few minutes at Turin's Stadio Olimpico.
Claudio Marchisio sealed the win for the visitors with a stoppage-time goal after Torino defender Kamil Glik was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 90th minute.
With just 12 points left to play for, the result moved Antonio Conte's side 11 points clear at the summit. And the Juventus head coach could not hide his delight after the win.
"We prepared this match in every detail, as always, and took the initiative. Toro deserve compliments for their performance, as they stopped us scoring until the very end," he said.
"These are extremely important goals, as now we need just one more point for a second consecutive Scudetto. To win it with three rounds to spare would be something extraordinary and we achieved it in a really tough atmosphere today," he said.
AC Milan leapfrogged Fiorentina and returned to the third place with a 4-2 win over Catania.
Catania surprised the hosts in the 30th minute when Nicola Legrottaglie prodded home Francesco Lodi's free-kick, despite Milan's dominance in front of goal.
But Milan headed into the break with greater momentum as Mathieu Flamini swept home Kevin-Prince Boateng's pass from close range.
In an end-to-end encounter, Catania restored their lead after 65 minutes thanks to a delicate chip from Gonzalo Bergessio who latched onto the end of a Pablo Barrientos through ball.
The visitors were unable to hold onto their lead as Milan equalised once again through Giampaolo Pazzini and the striker gave his side a lead for the first time in the match with his second goal just minutes later.
Milan looked comfortable at 3-2, but Mario Balotelli ensured the Rossoneri remained in the final Champions League spot with a stoppage time penalty.
AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri singled out Pazzini for praise after the win.
"Pazzini is an extraordinary player, as he moves so well in the penalty area and is a real 'fox in the box.' I' m very happy with his brace, but the whole team played well tonight," he said.
Inter Milan's hopes of European football next season were dealt with a blow as they lost 1-0 at Palermo.
Josip Ilicic scored the only goal of the game after only 10 minutes to lift the hosts out of the bottom three on goal difference and leave Inter in seventh, two points off a Europa League place.
Siena's relegation worries increased this afternoon as Pablo Osvaldo's hat-trick helped European hopefuls Roma to an emphatic 4-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico.
Genoa picked up three crucial points in their battle against relegation with a narrow 1-0 victory at Chievo.
With four games of the season to go, Genoa are level on points with Palermo just above the bottom three, while Chievo are not mathematically safe yet with just a seven-point advantage over the relegation zone.
Adem Ljajic starred as Fiorentina cruised to a 3-0 win away to Sampdoria, who played the last 10 minutes of the game a man short following the sending off of Daniele Gastaldello.
Elsewhere, Lazio are three points off the last Europa League spot for next season after a scoreless draw with Parma at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.
