Despite a 1.7 percent chance to get the top pick, the Cavaliers shockingly won the NBA draft lottery. |
The Cleveland Cavaliers, represented by its general manager David Griffin, claimed the No. 1 selection in the NBA draft for the second straight year with only 1.7% odds.
The Cavaliers finished the regular season with 33-49, and was only ranked ninth to capture the first pick. And the Cavaliers still made it two years in a row and third time in four years.
In 2011, the Cavaliers chose All-Star guard Kyrie Irving as the first pick; last year, they used the No. 1 selection for Anthony Bennett from UNLV.
The Milwaukee Bucks, finished the regular season with the league's worst record (15-67), had the highest probability (25%) to earn the first pick, and ended up with the second pick. The Philadelphia 76ers, represented by Dr. J, got the third pick.
According to ESPN, since the lottery changed to the present format in 1994, the team with the best odds had only won three of the 20 lotteries.
After the first three picks were confirmed, the picks 4-14 were determined by inverse order of the regular-season records. Orlando Magic, Utah Jazz, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets (from Detroit Pistons), Philadelphia 76ers (from New Orleans Pelicans), Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic (from New York Knicks via Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns) gained the 4-14 picks respectively.
The 2014 draft will take place on Thursday, June 26.
