Martin Kaymer is up to 11th place in the world rankings following his runaway win at the US Open on Sunday.

The 29-year-old German led the tournament from start to finish to bag his second major after the 2010 PGA Championship.

A former world No. 1, Kaymer struggled badly after winning his first major and at one stage he fell out of the world top 60.

Australia’s Adam Scott retained the world No. 1 spot ahead of Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Masters champion Bubba Watson.

But Kaymer’s historic victory at Pinehurst was largely met by indifference in his homeland.

Kaymer became the first champion from Germany with an eight-shot victory over Americans Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton, but his success barely caused a ripple at home, where attention was firmly focused on football.

Germany was opening its World Cup campaign in Brazil against Portugal yesterday, meaning Kaymer’s triumph could not have come at a worse time for attention.

Some of the congratulations he did receive even had a football flavor. Germany forward Lukas Podolski was one of the few to recognize Kaymer’s “legendary perqformance” in a tweet. The German Olympic Sports Confederation also tweeted its congratulations.

Kaymer joined Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy and Seve Ballesteros as multiple major winners who also attained the world No. 1 ranking before turning 30.
