Alejandro Sabella, who steered Argentina to the World Cup final in Brazil, has decided to quit as their coach.

Alejandro Sabella has reportedly quit as coach of Argentina, just 16 days after leading the team to their first World Cup final for 24 years.

Widespread media reports said the 59-year-old had told Argentina's football association president Julio Grondona of his intention to resign.

Appointed Albiceleste coach in 2011, Sabella led the team 41 times, posting 26 victories, 10 draws and five defeats.

The last of those defeats was the 1-0 loss to Germany in extra-time of the World Cup final at Rio's Maracana stadium.

After the match Sabella hinted at his intention to step down by telling reporters he "had nothing to say about the future."

Upon arriving in Buenos Aires after the defeat to Germany he said he was unsure if he had "energy in the tank".

Among the favorites to succeed Sabella are Colombia manager Jose Pekerman, who was in charge of the team at the 2006 World Cup, former Barcelona boss Gerardo Martino and ex-Boca Juniors coach Miguel Angel Russo.
