World number one Serena Williams moved into the U.S. Open second round after beating Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday.
The defending champion made only eight unforced errors throughout the match, which lasted for less than an hour.
"I think my game was good for tonight," said Williams about her match.
"There's always a little nerves going into the first round, especially as a defending champion, so I feel like I served well."
18-year-old Townsend was ranked 103rd in WTA rankings.
