China opened their 2014 FIVB Men's World Championship campaign in the right track after defeating Egypt in four sets (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 33-31) in the third day of the competition's Pool C in Gdansk on Monday.
China built up a 2-0 lead as their quickness outplayed the African side in the first two sets. China continued their momentum in the opening phase of the third set to take a 9-5 advantage. However, Egypt made a powerful comeback in the closing points of the set that a great defensive move by Mamdouh Abdelrehim closed the set to their favour 25-23.
The standoff in the fourth set went 30 minutes long but China gallantly held their ground to seal set and match victory.
China's Zhi Yuan smashed a tournament-high total of 31 points in four sets, narrowly missing an exact average of 8 points per set. For Egypt, Ahmed Elkotb uncorked 23 tallies having played a little over than two sets.
