Defender Rim Chang-woo scored a late goal in extra time to help South Korea beat DPR Korea 1-0 on Thursday in the men's soccer final at the Asian Games.

It was South Korea's first Asiad title in men's soccer since 1986.

Just as the match seemed headed for a penalty shootout, Rim got the ball following a scramble near the goalmouth and then struck it into an open net, sending the spectators into a frenzy.

"We were not offensive enough today. I saw that our players missed good chances and that was exactly what I was worried aoubt," said South Korean coach Lee Gwang-jong.

Earlier in the day, Iraq beat Thailand 1-0 to take the bronze medal.

"We targeted gold but we couldn't win it. We have other goals for the future. We will have cups, including the Asian Cup. We are now looking for qualification for the World Cup," said Iraq coach Al Azzawi Hakeem Shakir Flayyih.
