World No.2 badminton player Chen Long of China beat French Brice Leverdez in two straight sets at the Yonex Denmark Open on Friday, stamping a berth in the men's singles semifinals.
Chen took just 37 minutes to beat unseeded Leverdez 21-9, 21-7. He will meet Indian Kashyap Parupalli in the semifinals on Saturday.
In women's singles, Olympics champion and top seed Li Xuerui of China was stretched by Zhang Beiwen from the United States before beating her in three sets 15-21, 21-15 ,21-12. She will take on fourth seed Sung Ji-Hyun of South Korea, who beat Indian Sindhu P.V. 25-23, 22-20.
The other semifinal of women's singles will see a "civil war" as second seed Wang Shixian and third seed Wang Yihan, both of China, also advanced on Friday.
In men's doubles, the multi-time world champion and former Olympic gold medalist Fu Haifeng together with his new partner Zhang Nan defeated second-seeded Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in a close fight 17-21, 21-19, 21-11.
However, the women's doubles field saw sixth-seeded Juliane Reika Kakiiwa/Miyuki Maeda of Japan caused a huge upset beating top seeds Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua of China in two sets 23-21, 21-14.
Third seeds Xu Chen/Ma Jin will play against their teammates Liu Cheng/Bao Yixin in Saturday's mixed doubles semifinals. Endi
