The 2017 Badminton World Championships will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Saturday.

Glasgow, which failed a bid for the 2017 Sudirman Cup mixed team event to Australia's Gold Coast, convinced the BWF for their detailed bid at a meeting held in the Peruvian capital Lima.

Glasgow's 6,000-seat Emirates Arena has been confirmed as the venue for badminton's most prestigious tournament.

It will be the second time that Glasgow has hosted the World Championships. The biggest city of Scotland staged the event for the first time in 1997.

It will be the fifth occasion they have taken place in Britain, with Birmingham having hosted them in 1993 and 2003 and London in 2011.

Next year's is scheduled to be held in Jakarta with no event on the calendar in 2016 due to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
