Winter Universiade opens in Slovakia

The 27th World Winter Universiade was opened by Slovak President Andrej Kiska at an opening ceremony in north part of Slovakia, Strbske Pleso, on Saturday night.

Kiska said in his speech that sports can overcome all forms of aggression and evil.

"We are happy to enjoy respect, friendship, tolerance, fair play and beauty of sport competition, in these increasingly troubled times, in which we are witnessing violence and acts of aggression, in many places around the world," said Kiska.

"I am happy that the World Winter Universiade is back in Slovakia after 16 years and I believe that everyone will compete fair-play," he added.

Kiska also mentioned the responsibility of the international community to protect youth and their further development.

Slovak Minister of Education Science, Research and Sport, Juraj Draxler, spoke of the possibility of this event to promote Slovakia.

"We want to showcase the natural beauty of our land and the hospitality of our people. This event I hope will further promote Slovakia," he said.

A total of 465 athletes from 31 countries and regions came to Strbske Pleso and Osrblie to join the competitions.

David Brunn, a representative of Slovakia said, "I am very surprised that Slovakia was able to organize an event, that is so big."

The Universiade will go through to Feb. 14 to finish in Spain. The 2015 edition will be the first Universiade to be hosted by two countries as the first part of this event is located at Strbske Pleso and Osrblie in northern Slovakia to Feb. 1.
