Spanish Formula One racing driver Fernando Alonso was able to leave hospital in Barcelona on Wednesday, three days after a high-speed crash in pre-season practice.

Alonso had hit a wall at an estimated 150 miles an hour in his McLaren-Honda car during Sunday morning practice at the Circuit of Catalonia, just outside of Barcelona and was airlifted to hospital.

Initial reports were that Alonso had not suffered any serious injuries and that was quickly confirmed by his team and representative, who also made it clear that with over three weeks until the start of the Formula One season, there was no need to rush the recovery of the two-times World Champion and that he would only leave hospital when he was "able to do things normally."

Alonso's recovery was confirmed early on Wednesday afternoon when he walked unaided from the General Hospital of Catalonia, where he had been receiving treatment.

He will now spend a few days convalescing in his home town of Oviedo on the north coast of Spain before resuming his preparations for the Australian Grand Prix, which will be held on March 15th.
