Defending champion Chen Long of China secured a semifinal spot in the men's singles event at the Yonex Denmark Open in central Denmark's Odense, on Friday.

The top-seeded Chen lost the first game 21-13 to unseeded Wei Nan of Hong Kong, China, who entered the quarterfinals after beating former world number one, Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei in two straight sets.

Chen made quick adjustment and fought back hard, scoring a string of six consecutive points to build a 13-6 lead, taking the second game 21-13.

In the decider, Wei took an early lead 5-2, but Chen managed to wrap up the game in 21-16.

In the women's singles early Friday, second seed Spaniard Carolina Marin defeated unseeded Michelle Li of Canada 21-14, 21-11, to set up a semifinal clash with the winner between sixth-seeded Wang Yihan of China and Indian P.V. Sindhu.
