World number one Angelique Kerber beats Dominika Cibulkova in her opening match at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Angelique Kerber was forced to dig deep in her WTA Finals opener before the German world No. 1 battled past Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 in a high-class baseline slugfest at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last night.

Earlier, Simona Halep got her campaign off to a perfect start when the Romanian world No. 4 dominated American Madison Keys to kick off round-robin play in the elite eight-woman, season-ending event with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the Red Group. Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland opens her campaign against Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova today with Garbine Muguruza of Spain and Czech Karolina Pliskova completing the White Group.
