Number one seed Andy Murray moved into the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament on Tuesday following a relatively comfortable straight sets 6-4, 6-3 win over Rumanian wildcard Marius Copil.

Murray was the biggest name in action on a blustery Tuesday in Madrid, but needed just over one hour and 20 minutes to claim his win to move into the last 16.

Some of Tuesday's matches were for a place in the second round with Spain's Nicolas Almagro booking a tie against Novak Djokovic after defeating fellow countryman Tommy Robredo 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Elsewhere it was not a good day for home players as Pablo Carreno was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Benoit Paire, Albert Ramos lost 6-1, 6-3 to Diego Schwartzman and Roberto Bautista-Agut fell following a marathon three set match against Ivo Karlovic, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (11), 7-6 (9).

Ryan Harrison defeated Bernard Tomic 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, while number 9 seed David Goffin had to work hard to take his first set 7-6 (7) against Florian Meyer, before running away with the second 6-0.

Number 8 seed Dominic Thiem meanwhile joins Murray in the third round after beating Jared Donaldson 6-3, 6-4.

Both Spanish number one and number two seed, Djorkovic will make their debuts on Wednesday.

In the women's tournament, Simona Halep needed three sets before winning a nerve-wracking match 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 over Italian Roberta Vinci in an hour and 55 minutes to book a last 16 match against Australian, Samantha Stosur after the 2016 semi-finalist defeated Mariana Duque Marino 6-3, 7-5.

American, CoCo Vandewegue defeated Laura Siegemund, who recently won in Stuttgart, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and will face Spain's Carla Suarez in the last 16.

Meanwhile Sorana Cirstea had a straightforward victory against Caterine Bellis and will play Japan's Misaki Doi, who defeated Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-2.

Finally the all-Chinese clash between Qiang Wang and Saisai Zheng ended with the victory of the former 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to earn a third round tie with Russian Svetland Kuznetsova.
