Wu Lei's winner saw 10-man China record a 2-1 comeback win over Qatar in their final fixture of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday.

China went into the match with faint hopes of third place and the play-offs but the heavy win required plus defeats for Uzbekistan and Syria was not forthcoming, as China finish in fourth place in Group A with 12 points, while Qatar end their campaign at the bottom of the group with seven.

Qatar took the lead in the 47th minute after showing fine combination play before Almoez Ali squared the ball to Akram Afif who scored past Zeng Cheng.

Xiao Zhi then equalized for China in the 74th minute after a sliding finish to convert a cross from Jiang Zhipeng. The visitors were then reduced to 10 men with just 10 minutes remaining when captain Zheng Zhi was sent off for bringing down Afif who was through on goal.

However, the numerical disadvantage did not deter the Chinese who scored a second goal just minutes later. Wu Lei was in the right place at the right time to lash in a fierce shot, which proved to be the winner.
