Spanish Jon Aberasturi from team Ukyo timed 1:50:50 to win the opening stage of 2017 Tour of Hainan on Saturday, becoming the first rider putting on the yellow jersey in this annual cycling event.

Aberasturi, who did not expect to win the race at the beginning, passed Jakub Mareczko from Wilier Triestina - Selle Italia to storm across the finish line, he also won the green jersey as the best sprinter of the first stage.

Vitaliy Buts from the Kolss cycling team was awarded the polka-dot jersey, while the blue jersey went to Chen Zhiwen from China Giant as the best Asian rider.

For Aberasturi, the first stage was quite fast-paced with lots of slopes, but he managed to occupy an advantageous position of the peloton and finally got the first place.

The first stage is a circuit race in Wanning, which is located in southeast Hainan covering 88.3 kilometers.

This year's Tour of Hainan will last 9 days, and the next stage shall take place from Wanning to Haikou, the capital city of Hainan, covering a total distance of 230.2 kilometers.
