Sixteen new projects for the 2022 Winter Olympics have broken ground, and 26 more projects will kick off by the end of the year, according to the Beijing Major Projects Construction Headquarters Office on May 31 as it released the master plan for constructing the event's venues and supporting infrastructure.

The master plan lists 52 Winter Olympic construction projects, including 18 projects of building or revamping sports venues, 31 projects on supporting infrastructure, and three projects on other supporting facilities.

The National Speed Skating Oval, the Shougang Ski Jumping Center and the Winter Olympics Training Center in Beijing, as well as the National Alpine Skiing Center and the National Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Center in Yanqing are on schedule to be complete by June 2020, the authorities said. Newly built supporting venues such as the Beijing Winter Olympic Village, the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village, and the Yanqing Press Center will be complete by 2021. Renovation projects for venues such as the National Aquatics Center and the National Stadium will finish between 2020-21.

To keep to the timetable, Beijing will speed up the construction of the National Speed Skating Oval, the National Alpine Skiing Center, the National Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Center, the Winter Olympics Training Center, and the Beijing Winter Olympic Village, which all began this year. Meanwhile, Beijing will make coordinated efforts to ensure the construction of the Shougang Ski Jumping Center, the Yanqing Press Center, and the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village. The construction of supporting infrastructure and preparation for renovation projects will also be on track.

Among the 16 projects that have broken ground this year, there are five sports venue construction projects – the National Speed Skating Oval, the Winter Olympics Training Center, the Beijing Winter Olympic Village, the National Alpine Skiing Center, and the National Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Center – and 11 supporting projects such as transportation and electric power facilities.

By the end of this year, the main concrete and steel framework of the National Speed Skating Oval, the roofing of the Winter Olympic Training Center, and about 45 percent of the ground work for skiing trails at the National Alpine Skiing Center will be complete. The laying of race tracks and the installation of cooling tubes will also be finished at the National Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Center.
