A survey on barrier-free service in Beijing will be carried out to enhance the city's accessibility for the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games, said the Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation.

According to an official in charge of the survey, the federation will establish a committee and call for suggestions from experts, associations of the disabled, and the disabled themselves to compile a guide for barrier-free service at Paralympic venues, with the purpose of serving the disabled, the elderly and people who have mobility restrictions.

The federation plans to strengthen supervision of barrier-free service across the city, particularly at major public locations near the Winter Paralympic venues, major roads, as well as tourist attractions.

In recent years, Beijing has promoted the construction of barrier-free upgrades in light of the city’s preparations for the Winter Paralympics. In the past five years, 235 barrier-free taxis have been added or upgraded, which are now operating in a market-based model. Meanwhile, the Beijing government covers the excess cost for disabled persons of the first and second degree who take barrier-free taxis. Moreover, the government has helped in barrier-free renovations in 60,000 homes of the disabled.

The Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation has also conducted several investigations for three years into barrier-free service on 17 metro lines, 325 hotels and 11 municipal parks and garden museums, recording in detail the fully accessible facilities and services in these places. It has so far completed compiling three chapters of its authoritative guide, covering metro transit, parks and hotels.
