Arsenal coach Unai Emery has given a vote of confidence to the club's veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech as his side prepares for their Premier League game away to Chelsea on Sunday.

The arrival of Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen over the summer has increased the pressure on 36-year-old Cech, who made several excellent saves as Arsenal lost 2-0 to Manchester City in their opening game of the season last Sunday, but struggled with his distribution with his feet, giving possession away 11 times.

Emery's style of play means many moves to begin with the keeper, but Cech's passing was poor on occasions and saw him receive criticism in the press.

However, in his pre-game press conference on Thursday, Emery said Cech would continue on Saturday.

"The decision is easy; Petr Cech will continue to start the match, I believe in him and if he starts badly I will still believe in him."

"I am very happy with his performance, I think he has experience and quality," said the Arsenal boss, who added that the veteran and Leno were "two important goalkeepers for us," even though they had "different qualities".

The former Sevilla and Paris Saint Germain coach admitted Arsenal would need time to adapt after he arrived in the summer to replace Arsene Wenger, but said the opening day defeat "gave us more information for things to improve."

"For me it's most important the players know positive things we did, and also the things we need to improve," said Emery.
