The first test competition of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held in February 2020 in the National Alpine Ski Center, according to the Beijing organizing committee for the games.
The organizing committee held a meeting on Thursday to make arrangements for the operation of the venues. This ushered in the transition from preparatory work for the games to operational matters, said Zhang Jiandong, vice mayor of Beijing and executive vice president of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.
According to Han Zirong, secretary general of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, three venues have been chosen as pilot venues, namely, the National Aquatics Center (also known as the Water Cube) in Beijing, the National Alpine Ski Center in Yanqing district, and the Genting Resort Secret Garden in the city of Zhangjiakou. The results of the trial operation will later be used to decide on general elements of other venues, including organizational structure of the teams, games operation, services for various groups, among others.
An operation plan for the pilot venues will be formulated in 24 weeks, according to the meeting. The plan will consist of seven chapters, including fundamental work, Winter Olympics operation, Winter Paralympics operation, pre-games preparation/transition period/post-games legacies, operational policies and procedures, emergency plans, and general rules.
The organizing committee will also launch test events for the games. The International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee require that all test events should be held 10 to 24 months prior to the Olympics and Paralympics competitions. The Beijing organizing committee has so far arranged for 20 events, including 15 for the Winter Olympics and five for the Winter Paralympics.
In addition to the test events at the National Alpine Ski Center, the Genting Resort Secret Garden in Zhangjiakou will hold the 2021 FIS Freestyle Ski & Snowboard World Championships, the largest test event leading up to the Winter Olympics.
Other test work will also be implemented by the Beijing organizing committee. The venues will receive special tests to determine the demand of key facilities and systems, as well as the size and competition scope of the tests. Special tests on key areas, for instance television broadcasting, will also be carried out.
Organization committees and local authorities in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou will test the venue operation and city coordination system during busy test event seasons.
