The World Winter Sports (Beijing) Expo 2018 kicked off on Sept. 19. More than 500 brands from Austria, Canada, Switzerland and other countries brought their newest winter sports products to the global gala in Beijing, supporting the city as it prepares for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

With the theme of "The Power of Ice and Snow," this year's expo aims to integrate winter sports, ice and snow industry, tourism and leisure, and youth training through exhibitions, forums, resource matching and special promotion.

"Hosting the Winter Expo is an important measure for us to examine our work for the Winter Olympics," said Zhang Jiandong, vice mayor of Beijing and executive vice president of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as he delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Zhang said the two previous Winter Olympics demonstrated that there is great potential in the ice and snow industry, as many exhibitors flocked to the fairs while the public, especially the young people, were fascinated by the winter sports experience activities at the expo.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), sent a congratulatory message to the expo, saying that the annual expo has been serving as an excellent platform for promoting winter sports as well as winter sports industry in China since it launched in 2016.

Juan Antonio Samaranch, IOC vice president and chairman of the Beijing Winter Olympics Coordination Committee, said that Beijing is the first city in the world to hold both the summer and winter Games. He said that Beijing can run the most "intelligent" Winter Olympics in 2022, by integrating natural resources, human resources, and financial resources through various smart technologies. He added that the IOC, the Beijing 2022 organizing committee, and other international winter sports associations will work together towards that goal.

In the expo's display area, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee is presenting a theme exhibition to introduce the progress made so far for the 2022 Games, the venue planning, as well as the competition events of the Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games. The theme exhibition also provides the attendees opportunities to try out the ice and snow sports activities such as snowboarding and curling.
