Zhu leads China to 3-1 victory over the Netherlands

Zhu Ting scored 19 points to spark China past the Netherlands 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-17) in the third round at the FIVB Women's World Championship on Tuesday night.


Xinyue Yuan back Zhu with 16 points, while Changning Zhang added 13 in the triumph.


Lonneke Sloetjes was the high scorer with 26 points in the defeat.


Boths teams entered the match with 9-1 records in a battle of powerful attacks.


The first set was tightly contested until the Netherlands pulled ahead in the final few points.


China came out strong in the second set and was in control throughout. They retained the momentum in the third and fourth sets with good serves, reception and cerebral play.


A spike by Yuan Xinyue gave China an 8-6 lead at the first TTO in the opening set. A spike by Gong Xiangyu was blocked out as China led 13-12. A block by Ding Xia put China up 16-14 at the second TTO. Sloetjes rose to meet a ball for a spike and the set was level at 19-19. Anne Buijs flew in on a back attack and the Dutch went ahead 21-20. A spike by Zhang Changning tied it 23-23. Buijs hammered a spike down the line and the Dutch had set point at 24-23. She gave the Netherlands the set 25-23 with another attack from the wing. Sloetjes had eight points in the set.


China moved out to a 5-1 lead in the second set after a block by Yuan. The Chinese attack and serve was functioning well in the juncture. China was in front 8-4 at the first TTO. Zhang fired an ace and the China lead was 12-8. A Gong spike off a nice back set made it 16-12 for China at the second TTO. The China lead grew to 19-12 and the Dutch called a timeout. Yan Ni's block took the China lead to 23-13 and they took the set 25-13. 


Sloetjes rose high for a spike from the wing and the score was 6-6 early in the third set. Yan came up with a big block and China led 8-6 at the first TTO. Gong ended a rally with a blast as China moved out to a 13-9 lead. The Dutch incurred problems with reception in the set. A Sloetjes spike sailed wide and China was up 18-14. Zhang put a soft spike past the high block and China was in front 23-17. They claimed the set 25-18 on a block by Yuan.


The Netherlands took a 5-2 lead in the fourth set. A spike by Li Yingying split two Dutch defenders and made it 7-7. China moved ahead shortly thereafter, going up 12-8 on a block by Zhu. The Netherlands roared back to tie it 13-13. China responded and was up 16-14 at the second TTO. China stretched the margin to 19-14 as the Dutch made errors on attack. China clinched the set and match 25-17 on one last attack.
