The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Winter Olympics launched a worldwide campaign on Oct. 15 to solicit ideas for the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympics to be held in the National Stadium (Bird's Nest) in Beijing. For the sake of staging an economical Olympics, the ideas are required to be submitted in text form only.

The solicitation is open to the world, and each idea should be no longer than 8,000 words, which must include three parts: the profile of the submitter, the idea, and the implementation plan, said Liao Quan, deputy director of the Cultural Activities Department of the Organizing Committee.

The elicited ideas are required to fully reflect the vision of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Olympic spirit, the inheritance and development of the splendid culture of the Chinese nation, the historic achievements China has made and revolutionary changes that have taken place in the new era, as well as the good image of China as a big power in the international community.

In general, the opening ceremony should be solemn, warm, joyful and friendly, highlighting the characteristics of ice-snow winter sports; its artistic expression should be innovative, with focus on the employment of high-tech means. The opening ceremony is expected to showcase the image of modern China and leave the world with beautiful memories.

Liao said the opening ceremony would include 13 sessions and a cultural performance. For the sake of collecting as many exciting ideas as possible, the idea submitted can be either a complete one covering all the 13 sessions and the performance, or a scheme for certain sessions such as the torch-lighting ceremony, the display of the Five Rings and the athletes' march-in, etc.

The submitted idea should not contain any pictures, videos or graphics. Its purpose is to implement the concept of putting on an economical Olympics and the new requirements of the International Olympic Committee, reduce complexity and save on costs.

The elicitation this time is not only to seek for best ideas, but look for top-notch professionals for the work teams for the opening and closing ceremonies, Liao added.

The deadline for submissions is set on Dec. 31. The organizing committee will establish an evaluation committee to review the proposals from January to March 2019, and will ultimately select 10 outstanding ones.
