The three-month mascot collection campaign for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games ended on Oct. 31. The review process for selecting the final design began on Nov. 1, and it will be unveiled in the second half of 2019, according to the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

On the last day of the design collection period, the Shougang Office of the Beijing Organizing Committee received throngs of people who came to submit their mascot designs. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission arrived with designs by the city's primary and middle school students. Other professional institutions like the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and Jilin University of Arts also made it on the last day to submit what they each had collected.

The Beijing Organizing Committee carried out various promotional activities for the collection campaign to engage public participation, said Liao Quan, deputy director of the Cultural Activities Department of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee. Among them, the theme activity named "Winter Olympic Mascot in My Heart" received keen response from the public, especially the students of the 230,000 middle and primary schools across the country. They got to know the Olympic spirit, learned about the Winter Olympics, and made designs of the Winter Olympic mascot.

Meanwhile, professional art colleges and design institutions around the country were also mobilized to participate. Ten academies of fine arts, including the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and China Academy of Art, jointly launched the "Design for 2022 Winter Olympics" initiative. In addition, the mascot collection campaign became a popular topic on new media platform.

"Many families have taken part in the collection campaign through their children," said Wang Jun, director of the sports, health and arts division of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. "They worked out the ideas together, and the children then turned them into paintings. Some ideas were results of class discussions, and then they converted them into works. Seen from the designs submitted, the children not only pay attention to the excellent traditional culture of China, but they are no short of international perspectives."

The Beijing Organizing Committee will organize expert review meetings to give awards to 10 designs, and the final design will be announced in the second half of 2019.
