Dutch side Ajax defeated Greek champions AEK Athens 2-0 in the Champions League Group E on Tuesday evening to secure their place in the knockout stages, after a match that was marred by violence between both sets of supporters.

Away side Ajax were in control of the game for much of the 90 minutes. A handball by Marko Livaja in the 67th minute saw the AEK forward sent off on his Champions League debut. Ajax forward Dusan Tadic scored from the resultant penalty and netted again five minutes later to seal the win.

Before the match kicked off, supporters of both teams clashed in the stands, with AEK fans throwing petrol bombs towards the Dutch supporters. Riot police soon intervened, with some fans suffering minor injuries.

The win sees Ajax move onto 11 points to secure their place in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. By contrast, AEK Athens remain rooted to the bottom of the group having lost all five of their matches, and cannot now qualify for the knockout stages of either the Champions League or the Europa League.
