Atletico Madrid assured their progress to the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday night with a 2-0 win at home to Monaco.

The result is another step towards the final for the Spanish club, who know all too well that this season's final will be played in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Diego Simeone's side needed less than 25 minutes to seal the points against the side currently second in France's Ligue 1 and with just one draw to show for their five games in the Champions League.

Fortune was on Atletico's side in the second minute when Koke's shot took a big deflection to leave Monaco keeper Diego Benaglio stranded and open the scoring.

Atletico were 2-0 ahead in the 24th minute when Antoine Griezmann was left with a simple finish after good work by Angel Correa.

The second half saw Atletico look to conserve their energy ahead of their difficult weekend Liga Santander game away to Girona and Monaco looked to take the game to the Spaniards.

The French outfit had an excellent chance to get back into the game eight minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty following handball from Atletico defender, Stefan Savic, who was sent off for a second yellow card.

Former Atletico striker Radamel Falcao took the spot kick, but side-footed Monaco's best chance of the game disappointingly wide.
