Two ice sports venues will be put into use this year in Beijing's Yanqing district, a competition area for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The two venues are an ice sports training base and an indoor ice rink.

The training base, located in central Yanqing, covers 87,000 square meters. It includes six ice rinks and eight curling tracks, and is able to accommodate training activities of ice hockey, curling, short track speed skating, etc. The venue will finish construction and be commissioned in May.

"The training base will be used for ice sports training throughout the country and Beijing, and open to public during idle time," said Ma Zhiyong, deputy head of the sports bureau in Yanqing district.

The indoor ice rink, located in the Badaling International Convention and Exhibition Center, covers 1,830 square meters. The rink is now in the process of ice-making and will open to the public on Jan. 19. According to Ma, the ice rink is the first indoor ice rink in Yanqing. Besides facilitating training and matches of short track speed skating and figure skating, the ice rink will accommodate local ice sports enthusiasts.

Beside the two venues, nine ice rinks will also be built this year in Yanqing, using spare space from several school campuses. These rinks will be used by the young people in Yanqing to train and experience ice sports.

In 2018, Yanqing built two outdoor ice rinks, each covering more than 10,000 square meters. They were mainly used for training and playing ice sports by the public.

Of all the 35 major construction projects Yanqing must build for the 2022 Winter Olympics, three projects have finished construction, 22 projects are now under way, and the remaining 11 projects are in the pipeline.
