Atletico Madrid on Monday confirmed an 18-month loan deal for Chelsea's Spain international striker, Alvaro Morata.

The deal was made official on Monday, although the move was an open secret after the striker arrived in Madrid in the early hours of Sunday in order to complete his medical check with the club.

The move has angered some Atletico fans who are unhappy about Morata's past with local rivals, Real Madrid, but speaking to the press on Sunday morning Morata said it was "normal for people to have their opinions, but I know what I have to do."

"I began my career at Atletico and people know where I come from know my story and what it means for me. The past is the past and I can't change it," commented the forward, while the Atletico website reminded fans he had "spent four years at our Academy, having joined as an Alevin (10-11 years old)."

The 26-year-old Morata joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 and scored 16 league goals in 47 appearances, although the feeling has always been that he wastes too many clear cut chances.

Atletico will hope he can provide support to Antoine Griezmann and provide cover for the injured Diego Costa.

Morata is likely to make his debut at some time during Atletico's next Liga Santander match, which is away to Betis, while his home debut will be the following week in the Madrid derby against non-other than Real Madrid.
