All venues for the 2022 Winter Olympics will adopt green energy, according to a Green Power Supply agreement between the Beijing organizing committee and the State Grid signed Wednesday.

This clean energy program would make the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing the first Olympic event in history to power all its venues with green and renewable energies produced from clean sources, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Wednesday's signing ceremony was attended by Zhang Jiandong, vice mayor of Beijing and executive vice president of the Beijing organizing committee, and Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., vice president of the IOC and chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Beijing.

Zhang said that powering the Olympics venues with green energy is an effort in implementing the principle of hosting a green Olympics and delivering on Beijing's bidding promises, as well as an active response to the sustainability requirement in the Olympic Agenda 2020 and the New Norm.

He said he hopes the power suppliers would ensure clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy for the Olympics venues, and the venues would strengthen management on power and adopt energy-saving equipment. He added that this program would hopefully promote the use of clean energy across Beijing and Zhangjiakou in Hebei province.

On his part, Samaranch said that Beijing's green Olympics principle fits well with the Olympic Agenda 2020. The Beijing organizing committee has already begun implementing the green principle with the use of existing venues and facilities. He added that the use of green energy in all the 2022 venues will not only be important for Beijing and Hebei, but also for China and the world as well as the future generations.
