Manchester City beat hosts Everton 2-0 to return to the top of the Premier League on Wednesday.

The defending champions scored with almost the last act of each half, firstly through Aymeric Laporte and then in the dying embers of the second period through Gabriel Jesus.

Pep Guardiola's side, who played one more game than Liverpool, returned to the top of the Premier League for the first time since December 16, moving ahead of the Reds on goal difference.

David Silva whipped in the free-kick two minutes into the added time of the first half, Laporte rose high unchallenged to power the ball past Jordan Pickford.

Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling both wasted good opportunities after the break before Jesus sealed victory in the seventh minuter of the stoppage time.

Kevin De Bruyne collected the ball, drove infield and slid a pass to fellow substitute Jesus whose shot was saved, but the Brazilian headed home to seal the victory.

Liverpool, who were held to draws by Leicester City and West Ham in the last two matches, will regain the top position should they beat Bournemouth on Saturday, 24 hours before City host Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.
