Jose Mourinho's firing cost Manchester United just under £20 million according to the club's latest financial results.

Manchester United on Thursday revealed the enormous cost of the compensation paid to former coach Jose Mourinho and his assistants when he was sacked in December.

The club confirmed that it paid 19.6 million pounds (1 pound = 1.28 U.S. dollars) to the coach and his five assistants after they were shown the door less than halfway through their third season at the club.

Details of the payments appeared as "exceptional items" in the club's half-yearly accounts in which Manchester United also announced record revenues of 208.6 million pounds, despite their worst start to a league campaign in 28 years.

After interest payments, tax and amortization that 208.6 million pounds of revenue is translated into an operating profit of 44 million.

Despite the cost of sacking Mourinho and his staff, the club considered it right to show the Portuguese coach the door and replace him with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Mike Phelan as assistant coach on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.

Executive Vice-Chairman, Ed Woodward said on Thursday that the move "has had a positive impact throughout the club."

"We are delighted with the improvement in the team's performances since December and we look forward to a strong finish to the 18/19 season," he added.

Solskjaer has led Manchester United to 10 wins, a draw and just one defeat in his 12 games in charge, although that defeat was a 2-0 home loss to Paris Saint Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, which leaves the club on the verge of going out of Europe.
