Li Yingying claimed a game-high 42 points but still could not prevent Tianjin from a home defeat to Beijing, which took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 finals of the Chinese Women's Volleyball Super League (CVL) on Saturday.

Beijing won in their first CVL final match by 3-2 (25-22, 27-25, 21-25, 20-25, 18-16) when they faced the defending champions Tianjin, which have 14 appearances in the final.

Beijing, which knocked out Shanghai in the semis, surged into a 2-0 set lead but the home side fought back and levelled it on 2-2.

In the fifth set, Beijing fumbled a 14-11 advantage but still held on the lead to close it by 18-16.

Tianjing's Margaret Rachel collected 27 points with 26 spikes and 1 block, while spiker Liu Xiaotong also contributed 15 points.

Tianjin's coach Chen Youquan said: "Both teams have played their games, but Beijing were better on decisive points. We will work on our blocks and defense."

Beijing will host Tianjin in the second match on March 5.
