Liverpool's title hopes dented after goalless derby draw

Everton may still not have beaten neighbors Liverpool since October 2010, but after Sunday's 0-0 draw at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby they can draw consolation from the fact that they have dealt a blow to their neighbors' title hopes.

The draw leaves Liverpool adrift from Manchester City, who returned to the top of the table after their 1-0 win away to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Liverpool have now drawn four of their last six games and looked nervous in attack with Mo Salah missing a couple of chances, although the draw certainly didn't flatter Everton, who gave everything for 90 minutes.

In contrast to Liverpool's stuttering form, Rihad Mahrez's second half goal gave Manchester City their fifth consecutive win as they triumphed 1-0 to Bournemouth in a match where the score doesn't tell the full story.

Pep Guardiola said after the game that it was one of the "best performance" his side had "ever played."

"Incredible," said Guardiola, whose team enjoyed an incredible 82 percent of possession and whose only setback was a first half hamstring injury suffered by Kevin de Bruyne.

Tottenham and Arsenal shared the points in the North-London derby, with the result perhaps indicative of Tottenham's poor moment of form.

Mauricio Pochettino's team have taken just one point from nine and they can now forget about the league title and start to worry about keeping third place.

Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 16th minute and it wasn't until Harry Kane's penalty with quarter of an hour to go that Spurs were level, although Arsenal claimed that the striker had been offside when he was fouled.

Nonetheless, Unai Emery's side would have claimed all three points if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had not wasted a last minute penalty as Hugo Lloris guessed correctly where he was going to place the ball.

Belief seems to be the key at Old Trafford these days as Manchester United came from behind against Southampton and made it 10 wins on 12 league games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Romelu Lukaku has taken full advantage of Anthony Martial's injury to score four goals in four days after struggling to get a look in the new year.

The Belgian netted twice in midweek against Crystal Palace and scored two more, the second coming two minutes from time, to help sink the Saints who had opened the scoring thanks to Yann Valery and equalized thanks to James Ward Prouse.

"Romelu is a quality striker. He knows what to do and he has the ability to deliver it," said Solskjaer after the game.

Kepa Arrizabalaga was back in goal for Chelsea after last weekend's incident in the Carabao Cup final and his side made it two wins in five days as they won the south London derby away to Fulham.

The home side sacked Claudio Ranieri in midweek, but Scott Parker was unable to enjoy a win in his first game in charge. Gonzalo Higuain put Chelsea in front and although Callum Chambers leveled for Fulham, a goal from the much-criticized Jorginho in the 31st minute rounded off the afternoon's scoring.

Brenden Rodgers' return to the Premier League as new Leicester City coach got off to a frustrating start when Andre Gray netted an injury time winner to give Watford a 2-1 win on Sunday lunchtime.

Troy Deeney scored a fifth minute opener, but Jamie Vardy (who later had to leave the pitch injured) equalized 15 minutes from time and Leicester had looked the more likely side to take all three points before Gray's winner.

Florin Andone struck late to give Brighton their first league win of 2019 and three vital points as they crept past Huddersfield 1-0 on Saturday, while West Ham had a routine 2-0 win at home to Newcastle.
