Two-time AFC Champions League winners Guangzhou Evergrande will start their 2019 campaign without captain Zheng Zhi when they take on Japanese side Sanfrecce Hiroshima in their Group F opener on Tuesday.

Fabio Cannavaro's side, who have never faced Hiroshima in the Champions League, began their domestic CSL season with a 3-0 victory over Tianjin Tianhai on Friday, though their joy was tempered by the fact that Zheng was injured in the pre-match warm-up.

"Our captain has not fully recovered from his injury, he will not play tomorrow," Cannavaro said in the pre-match press conference.

"We have a very intense match schedule at the beginning of the season, so you should not be surprised if I make a few changes to tomorrow's line-up," the Italian added.

Hiroshima will be making their fifth appearance of the season on Tuesday after beating Thai side Chiangrai United on penalties in their Champions League play-off tie. The Japanese outfit began their domestic J-League season with two draws.
