Rennes claimed their third French Cup title after overcoming Paris Saint-Germain 6-5 through penalty shoot-out in Saturday's final.

The 12-time winner PSG were 2-0 up after 21 minutes with goals from Dani Alves and Neymar. However, Rennes cancelled out that advantage by Presnel Kimpembe's own goal and Edson Mexer's header.

The score remained after extra time, before PSG's Christopher Nkunku cracked on spot kick to gift Rennes another title of the tournament after 1965 and 1971.

PSG, who had wrapped up Ligue 1 champion last weekend, went ahead in the 13th minute through Alves' spectacular volley.

Neymar, returning to the starting line-up for the first time in three months from injury, was released by Angel Di Maria before chipping past goalkeepr Tomas Koubek in the 21st minute.

Two minutes after M'Baye Niang hit the post, Rennes made the most of Kimpembe's rash clearance on a Hamari Traore cross to get one back in the 40th minute. They found an equalizer in the 66th minute, as Mexer headed a Clement Grenier cross at target.

But it was a night to forget for French sensation Kylian Mbappe, who hit the post in the 99th minute and was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Damien Da Silva two minutes before the extra time came to conclusion.

Following 11 successful attempts in penalty shoot-out, Nkunku saw his shot over the crossbar, ending PSG's bid for the fifth straight title.
