Irving, Horford lead Celtics past Bucks 112-90 in opener

The visiting Boston Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 112-90 in the opening match of the their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Sunday.

Star guard Kyrie Irving collected 26 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists for Boston while forward Al Horford added 20 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Jaylen Brown had 19 and Gordon Hayward came off the bench to contribute 13 for Boston.

Milwaukee's superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo met with tough defense throughout the match. He scored 22 points but shot just 7 for 21 and didn't make his first field goal until the first minute of the second quarter.

Khris Middleton had 16 for Milwaukee, which completed a four-game sweep of the Detroit Pistons and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001. The Celtics came off a sweep of the Indiana Pacers in the first round.

The Celtics had a strong start into the game, leading at 26-17 after the opening quarter. The home team regained momentum in the second quarter and pulled with 52-50 at halftime.

Spearheaded by Irving, Boston used a 12-0 sprint to enlarge the lead in the third quarter and in the final quarter, the Celtics never looked back.

Game 2 will be held in Milwaukee on Tuesday.
