Ma Long claims men's singles gold

China's Ma Long claimed his third straight men's singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships on Sunday, becoming the first man in over half a century to do so.

The 30-year-old multi-Olympic champion's top spin attacks and placement shots were too much for Sweden's Mattias Falck, with Ma winning 11-5, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5.

Ma is only the third man in history to have claimed three or more consecutive singles crowns, a feat that had not been achieved since compatriot Zhuang Zedong won the 1961, 1963 and 1965 editions of the biannual tournament.

Fired-up Liu wins women's singles gold

Liu Shiwen gave fellow Chinese Chen Meng an 11-0 beating en route to winning the women's singles title at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Saturday.

An all fired-up Liu, who didn't concede a point in one set of her semifinal against more heralded teammate Ding Ning, beat the 25-year-old Chen 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 11-0, 11-9.

It was Liu's second gold in Budapest following her mixed doubles victory pairing up with Xu Xin on Friday.

"This is my sixth World Championships and third singles final," said the 28-year-old. "If I had lost this time, I might not have a second chance."

Ma/Wang claim men's doubles gold

Chinese duo Ma Long and Wang Chuqin won the men's doubles gold medal, beating Romania's Ovidiu Ionescu and Spain's Alvaro Robles 4-1 at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Saturday.

The Chinese had met some trouble in the second set before they had the match under control and won 11-3, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-5.

This is China's third gold in the Budapest Championships since Liu Shiwen and Xu Xin won the mixed doubles event and China has swept the women's singles semifinal berths.

Xu/Liu win mixed doubles

Chinese duo Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen beat defending champions Maharu Yoshimura and Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan 4-1 (11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4) to take the mixed doubles crown at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Friday.

The mixed doubles has been added to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics nine days after the Japanese pair claimed the gold at the 2017 World Championships.

Sun/Wang win women's doubles gold

Chinese duo Sun Yingsha/Wang Manyu won women's doubles gold as they defeated Japanese pair Hina Hayata/Mima Ito 4-2 at the World Table Tennis Championships here on Sunday.
