Former Spain international goalkeeper Iker Casillas was discharged from hospital on Monday, just five days after suffering a heart attack while training with his Portuguese club Porto.

The 37-year-old, who has made over 1,000 career appearances for Porto, Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, suffered the attack on May 1st and was taken to the CUF Hospital in Porto.

He was allowed to leave on Monday following a series of tests, although the goalkeeper was unable to say whether he would continue playing when he spoke to the press waiting outside of the hospital.

"A few days ago, something happened to me and here we are. It is tough to talk, but I am very grateful and I have been very lucky," said Casillas, who gave thanks for the thousands of messages he has received from companions and supporters.

"It has made me feel very loved by everyone and it was very emotional," he continued.

Casillas thanked staff at the hospital and everyone who had sent him messages through social media, however, he didn't confirm whether or not he would try to continue playing.

"I feel a lot better, but I have to rest for a couple of weeks or a couple of months. I don't really care how long for, because the important thing is to still be here... I don't know what the future will bring, the main thing is to be here now," concluded the goalkeeper. Enditem
