FC Barcelona's miserable week continued on Thursday with the news that striker Luis Suarez has undergone a knee operation which is almost certain to end his season.

The club informs in a communique on their official website that Suarez has "a medial meniscus injury in his right knee and surgeon Dr.Cugat will perform arthroscopic surgery on the Uruguayan under the supervision of the Club's medical staff."

Although Barcelona say that "the outcome of the process and an estimate of how long the striker will be out will be announced following the surgery, "with just over two weeks until the final of the Copa del Rey against Valencia on May 25th it seems virtually impossible for the Uruguayan to recover in time to play a further role this season."

Suarez has scored 25 goals this season and is the club's second highest scorer behind Leo Messi and with Ousmane Dembele also likely to miss the rest of the season with a torn hamstring, his loss is a serious problem for coach Ernesto Valverde.

The news of Suarez's injury comes just two days after Barca crashed out of the semifinal of this season's Champions League following a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool, which overturned their 3-0 advantage from the first leg.

Barca play their penultimate Liga Santander match of the campaign at home to Getafe on Sunday and end the season away to Eibar on May 18th.
